As the College of Science and Mathematics (COSM) at Georgia Southern University looks to the future, we are excited to share our key priorities for the upcoming Capital Campaign. These priorities represent strategic investments designed to elevate our research capacity, enhance student experiences, and produce the next generation of leaders in science and mathematics. Our priorities focus on four critical areas:
Doctoral Research Fellowships These fellowships are vital for recruiting high-quality Ph.D. students needed for Georgia’s workforce and economy. Fellows focus solely on driving their research forward, which is critical for growing research capacity in COSM and driving Georgia Southern closer to Carnegie R1 designation. They also serve as mentors to undergraduate and master’s students interested in research. Goal: $4 million.
Undergraduate Student Research Support Providing hands-on research is a vital component in undergraduate student development. Through Undergraduate Research Fellowships, students engage in research under faculty supervision, gaining valuable real-world experience. This builds resume worthy experience and serves as a launching point for academic and professional careers. Research participation leads to student presentations, co-authorship on publications, and an exceptional educational experience. It makes students more competitive for graduate school/medical programs and provides hands-on experience for STEM careers. Goal: $1.5 million.
Student Success Programs We are building a teaching and learning ecosystem engaging students in critical educational experiences to drive their development toward professional careers. These activities improve retention, graduation rates, and academic performance. They are key elements of recruitment, attracting more students, including top-tier high school graduates, helping ensure Georgia Southern is a “first-choice university”. These experiences directly assist students pursuing their first job or applying for graduate programs. Goal: $1.5 million.
COSM Excellence Fund The Excellence Fund will enhance COSM’s ability to deliver transformative education, groundbreaking research, and community engagement. It supports priorities including undergraduate and graduate scholarships, faculty development, research, equipment, and hands-on experiences like internships and undergraduate research. This enables COSM to attract and retain top-tier faculty and students, build stronger partnerships, and ensure graduates are well-prepared for the workforce. Donors play a critical role in shaping STEM education and driving innovation.
